Abstract

498,566. Electron multipliers. FARNSWORTH TELEVISION, Inc. Feb. 28, 1938, No. 6210. Convention date, March 22, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron multiplier a cloud of electrons is oscillated apart from the body which forms the cloud to be multiplied, the first part maintaining oscillating condition of the second. A common cathode 2, coated on its interior with silver on which is caesium, encloses two anodes 5, 6, one 5 connected to a potential source 7 through resonant circuit 9, the other 5 being connected over a H.T. choke 10 and load 11. A window 4 is formed in the anode opposite the cathode 5. Light falling through the window 4 on the cathode generates electrons which are oscillated about the anode 5, the potential of which is maintained by the oscillating system 2, 6, 9, 7 acting through the variable condenser 12 ; secondary emission occurs with the separate cloud as well as with that to be amplified. A thermionic cathode may supply the original electrons in place of photo emission from the cathode 2. In a modification, the cathode is divided and the two anodes are formed in one.
