Abstract
566,582. Discharge apparatus. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., TREECE, H. R.; and WILKINSON, R. A. May 27, 1943, No. 8497. [Class 39 (i)] An excess-voltage protective device consists of two dome-shaped electrodes 7 of iron, steel, nickel or nickel-steel, in which are inserted studs 8 of more easily volatilizable metal, such as aluminium or silver. The melting point of the stud metal must be over 400‹ C. and the boiling point between 1200‹ C. and 2000‹ C. A thin coating of radio-active uranium oxide on the surface of the electrodes ensures adequate ionization. The electrodes when assembled are baked in hydrogen or cracked ammonia at 600-700‹ C. for 10-15 minutes. The envelope 1 is baked at 400‹ C. for 10 minutes and filled with neon or neon and argon ; at 2 mms. spacing a mixture of 99 per cent neon and 1 per cent argon at 30-100 mms. will break down at 150 volts, or 80 per cent neon and 20 per cent argon at 400 volts at the same pressure.
