Abstract
592,263. Discharge apparatus. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Jan. 13, 1944, No. 710. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A discharge tube has a flat perforated grid on a supporting ring in engagement with the metal envelope, this ring thereby dividing the envelope into two compartments, one containing the anode and the other the cathode, both these electrodes being flat and parallel with the grid. In the form shown, a flat grid 42 composed of parallel wires 43 is supported on ring 41 carried by ring 40 between the flat anode 25 and the cathode surface 35 formed on the top cover of a nickel tube 33 containing a helix of aluminium oxide coated tungsten wire, this tube being supported from an outer magnetic shield 36 by three tangentially arranged resilient fingers 38. The cathode assembly is supported by flange 39 secured to the shield 36 and the lead 31. A similar grid 44 functioning as a screen is carried by a flanged cylinder 46 secured to leads 21, 22. The casing 15 is of iron or copper and the inter-electrode spacing is specified. The grid 42 may be formed by welding parallel fine wires to a ring 47 placed in a die block 53, Fig. 6, having an undercut recess 54 receiving a ram 55 which distorts ring 47 to the oval form shown (exaggerated) in Fig. 7. Only the part within the dotted line, Fig. 7, is required as the active grid, the rest being masked by supporting ring 41 clamped to the grid in a press, the two then being welded together.
