Abstract

479,952. Protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 10, 1936, No. 24662. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1935. [Class 38 (iv)] One element in a series-gap lightning-arrester comprises (a) spaced main electrodes 4, 5 of metallic material having arc quenching properties, and (b) are initiating means 8 electrically connected with at least one of the metallic electrodes 4. The arc quenching properties of the electrodes 4, 5 are due to the use of a metal, alone or alloyed with other metal, which does not bead but pits slightly under the action of an are. The arc initiating means 8 are made of relatively poor conducting material having better discharge initiating properties than the main electrode 4 whereby the arc after initiation is transferred to the main electrode. Such material may consist of a poor conducting binding-material and a large number of closely spaced conducting particles, for example, of silicon carbide or radio active material.
