Abstract
848,192. Electric furnaces. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION A. G. March 9, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 8092/59. Class 39(3). The vacuum chamber 1 of an apparatus for the degasification of e.g. steel melts, provided with one or more pipes 9 extending into a ladle or container 19 for the melt, is pear-shaped, narrowing gradually from a broad base towards an arched roof 12 and has a heating device e.g. a carbon electrode 6 arranged in the upper part of the pear-shaped chamber. An auxiliary arch 18 may be arranged above the roof 12 of the vacuum chamber and inside a vacuum tight steel hood. In the embodiment shown, the chamber is loaded and discharged through the one pipe 9 by raising and lowering the ladle 19. In another modification, the chamber is loaded and discharged by providing two pipes extending from the vacuum chamber into the ladle and gas is introduced into one of the pipes to provide a continuous " lift " of the melt into the vacuum chamber.
