Abstract

661,046. Stuffing-box substitutes. NATIONAL SMELTING CO., Ltd. Jan. 16, 1950 [Feb. 7,1949], No. 3313/49. Class 122(v) In a metal showering apparatus in which a shaft passes with a clearance through a gland, molten metal is fed to one end of the clearance and the metal escaping from the other end of the clearance is collected. Gland rings 5, of silicon carbide or sillimanite, loosely surround sleeves 4, of silicon carbide or graphite, fixed to a shaft 2 where it passes through the side walls 3 of a condenser the clearance between the rings and sleeves decreasing toward the outside of the condenser. Molten liquid is fed by splash action to the inner end of the clearance between the sleeve 4 and the gland 5 and escapes from the outer end of the gland to a trough 6 from whence it is returned to the condenser through a submerged opening 7. The gland may be heated by means of burners 9. In a modification the shaft is vertical and the gland is situated at the bottom of an external wall which is formed in the roof of the condenser and fed with liquid metal from a system of trough. the metal escaping from the gland falling into the condenser.
