Abstract
632,839. Refining tin. AMERICAN METAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1947, No. 24088. Convention date, March 20, 1941. [Class 82(i)] Lead is removed as an impurity from tin by forming a dross of stannous chloride and lead chloride on a tin-lead bath, maintaining the stannous chloride in the liquid phase on the bath, drawing off the dross and distilling therefrom the stannous chloride which is returned to the bath for the formation of further dross from any lead impurity remaining. As shown, a molten bath b of tin with lead as impurity is maintained molten at a temperature of 470‹-600‹F. and has on the surface a layer d of stannous chloride and lead chloride dross, formed by the addition of stannous chloride through a funnel 15 or by the addition of chlorine gas through a pipe 17, which is removed by a dross trap 8 and conduit 9 to a retort 10. The retort is maintained at a temperature sufficient to distil off the stannous chloride which is returned by the pipe 12 to the kettle but not sufficient to distil off the lead chloride. A stirrer 7 driven by a motor 4 agitates the bath. When the lead has been removed from the bath the temperature of the retort may be raised to 1500‹F. to remove all the stannous chloride which may be smelted to obtain tin. The residue of lead chloride in the retort may be removed as and when necessary.
