Abstract
611,928. Zinc distillation. NATIONAL SMELTING CO., Ltd., and ROBSON, S. March 12, 1946, No. 7619. [Class 82(i)] A process for the condensation of zinc as a liquid comprises two stages, viz., a first stage of surface condensation and a second stage on or in a mechanically produced shower or spray of molten zinc, the gas being led directly from the producing unit to the first stage and then to the second stage. As shown, a downwardly sloping condenser 1 has baffles 3 on which the first stage condensation takes place, the metal running down to form a pool 7 in a chamber 5 in which is situated a rotatable paddle wheel 6 producing a spray of molten zinc in which the second stage condensation takes place. The zinc-free gasses pass to a stack 12 and the metal is removed from the pool 7 over a weir 11. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the second stage has two chambers, the temperature in the second chamber being lower than that in the first and the gas and metal flowing in counter-current. The device for producing the shower may be horizontal or vertical and examples of different forms are described, Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 (not shown).
