Abstract
687,008. Separation of air. GES. FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN AKT.-GES. April 21, 1950 [April 23, 1949]. No. 9876/50. Class 8 (ii). A process for the production of oxygen from air by rectification in two juxtaposed high and low pressure columns 2, 5 comprises condensing under the high pressure at least a portion of nitrogen leaving the column 2 in a condenser 4 disposed in the column 5 and cooled by indirect heat exchange by liquid oxygen in a bath 6, using at least a portion of this condensed nitrogen for reflux in the column 5 and transferring by means of a pump 7 either condensed nitrogen or liquid oxygen from the low pressure column 5 to the high pressure column 2, e.g., through ducts 24, 3 for effecting condensation of nitrogen ascending therein. Oxygen rich liquid from the bottom of the column 2 is expanded at a valve 9 and enters the column 5 at an inlet 10, and gaseous oxygen and nitrogen products leave through ducts 14, 15 respectively. When liquid oxygen is transferred from column 5 it traverses a condenser at the top of column 2 thereby condensing nitrogen ascending therein and being itself vapourized to yield gaseous oxygen product and also feed for the column 5. The pump 7 is of the centrifugal kind with a vertical shaft driven from above and is so disposed that the pressure set up at the suction inlet is not lower than that above the indrawn liquid and the duct 24 is so arranged that any vapours formed in the pump 7 can gain access to the liquid collecting chamber.
