Abstract
884,408. Cold separation of air. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N. V. March 24 1959 [March 25, 1958], No. 10170/59. Class 8(2). Production of liquid nitrogen from compressed air is effected by forcing air at a relatively low pressure by a compressor 10 through a heat exchanger 18 in countercurrent to reflux and thence to the base 25 of a fractionating column 24 from the head of which gaseous nitrogen passes in to the condensing chamber 28 of a cold gas refrigerator 29, part of the soliquefied nitrogen being discharged on product through a valved duct 26 whilst the remainder amounting to at least half the feed air being returned to the column head as reflux. The proportions of liquid nitrogen product and reflux is controlled by a valve 46 and by pan 47; the valve being responsive to control means 48 itself responsive to a thermocouple at a level 50 of the exchanger 18. In a modification the proportion of nitrogen product and reflux is controlled by a valve 34 Fig. 2 (not shown) in the discharge duet 26 and which is controlled by a bellows device enveloped by a readily condensible fluid thermally connected to the feed air pan of the exchanger 18.
