Abstract
632,438. Separation of gases. AICHER, A. A., and PETROCARBON, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4811. [Class 8(ii)] In a process for the separation of gaseous mixtures at low temperatures in a plurality of fractionating columns a, c, cold vapour of a refrigerant, e.g., ethylene which has been condensed at h at a pressure of say 13 atmospheres and expanded at j to say 4 atmospheres and then vaporized performing refrigerating duty, e.g., in a reflux condenser o, is at least in part reliquefied in the reboiler b of the column c, and the liquid so formed is expanded at r to a still. lower pressure, say 1 atmosphere and effects further refrigerating duty, e.g., in a reflux condenser s.- The refrigeration is assisted by liquid ethylene expanded directly from 13 to 1 atmospheres through a valve m. In operation liquefied hydrocarbons to be separated at 4 atmospheres pressure enter at a<SP>1</SP> the fractionating column a. Liquid residue leaves at the base and gaseous ethane and ethylene from the head traverses coolers, i, l and is condensed in a tube b, expanded to 1.5 atmospheres pressure at d and is separated into gaseous ethylene which leaves the head and gaseous ethane which leaves near the base. The ethylene refrigerant is compressed at e, f, to 13 atmospheres and traverses a heat exchanger g before being condensed at h to serve to cool the coolers i, l in passing to the valves j, in which the pressure is reduced to 4 and 1 atmospheres respectively. Spent refrigerant is returned through the coolers i, l, and the heat exchanger g.
