Abstract

1,088,641. Cold separation of gas mixtures. NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELJSKY INSTITUTE SINTETICHES-KIKH SPIRTOV I ORGANICHESKIKH PRODUKTOV. Oct. 6, 1964, No. 40674/64. Heading F4P. In a process for separating a multi-component gas mixture, e.g. nitrogen, methane, ethane and C 3 to C 7 hydrocarbons into two groups of differing volatility and comprising passing compressed feed gas through a line 7 into the base of a distillation column 1 and up the tube space thereof in indirect heat exchange with condensate having been withdrawn from the base of the column through a line 8, expanded at a valve 17 and fed to the head of the shell space of the column in which said expanded condensate is in part vaporized to form distillation vapour, the latter is withdrawn through a line 9, compressed at 3, condensed in a watercooled heat-exchanger 4 and returned through a line 16 to the base of the column 1; produce high volatile group of components being withdrawn as gas from the head of the tube space through a line 14 whilst the low volatile group is withdrawn as liquid from the base of the shell space through a line 13. The vapour in line 9 cools an exchanger 2 in condensate line 8, and product gas in line 14 cools an exchanger 5 traversed by the compressed distillation vapour. In a modification the gaseous high volatile produce group prior to further separation is liquefied in a heat-exchanger 6, Fig. 2 (not shown), cooled by passage therethrough of a portion of the condensate withdrawn from line 8 and expanded at a valve 18 and the soevaporated condensate is returned through a line 20 to the suction end of feed gas compressor.
