Abstract

930,682. Cold separation of gas mixtures. PETROCARBON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. July 30, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 24813/58. Class 8(2). In cooling a compressed gas mixture e.g., hydrogen and carbon monoxide in heat exchangers 1, 2, Fig. 1, traversed by the cold products of separating, the cooling being sufficient to condense the less volatile component prior to separation in a chamber 3, part of the cold requirements of heat exchanger 2 is met by evaporating a portion of the separated liquid i.e. carbon monoxide in direct contact with a portion of the uncondensed hydrogen at a pressure intermediate that of the initial mixture and atmospheric. In separation the separated hydrogen after leaving exchangers 1, 2 through a duct 26 is expanded in a turbine 4 and a portion thereof is fed into a duct 211 where it is joined by liquid carbon monoxide after expansion in a valve 6 before traversing a duct 213 passing through exchangers 2, 1. The remaining expanded hydrogen gas in a duct 28 also serves to cool the exchangers. In a modification wherein ethylene, methane and hydrogen are separated from a mixture also containing nitrogen and carbon monoxide, the incoming mixture in a duct 31, Fig. 2, is first cooled in an exchanger 11 in countercurrent flow to product methane in a duct 325, product hydrogen in a duct 317, ethylene in a duct 323 and a mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide in a duct 322 and after further cooling in an exchanger 12 is separated in a column 17 into condensed hydrocarbons which pass through a duct 34 into a further column (not shown) and into a gaseous mixture of nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide which is partially liquefied in an exchanger 15 and separated in a chamber 16 from which the condensed nitrogen and carbon monoxide is expanded at a valve 8 and is vaporized in duct 318 of exchanger 15 in direct contact with a portion of gaseous hydrogen from the chamber 16 after warming in exchangers 15, 13, 12 and expansion in a turbine 19. The remaining expanded hydrogen gas traverses a duct 315 of exchangers 15, 13, a duet 316 and the duct 317 of exchanger 11 whilst the hydrogen nitrogen mixture traverses ducts 320, 321 leading to the outlet duct 322. Methane and ethylene separated in the further column passes along ducts 35, 36 respectively to the outlets 325, 323. Reflux for column 17 is provided by an auxiliary nitrogen cycle comprising a compressor 18 discharging partly into an expansion turbine 20 which provides cold for exchanger 13 and partly through an expansion valve 9 provides cold for a condenser at the head of column 17.
