Abstract

895,094. Liquefaction of gases. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Oct. 19, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35833/60. Class 8(2). Liquefaction of natural gas discharged by a compresser 2 at about 50 atmospheres pressure is effected in a heat exchanger 4 cooled by a counterflowing evaporating mixture of fluids e.g., ethane, propane and butane of differing volatilities in a. line 8 obtained by expansion at a valve 6 of pressurized mixture in the liquid phase and after cooling of said liquid mixture in the exchanger 4. The successively evaporated vapours of the mixture are compressed in the first stage of a three stage compresser 9 which delivers through aline 10 and water-cooler 11 to a liquid separator 12 from which vapour is fed to the second stage and liquid is added to the delivery of the second stage which in turn passes to a liquid separator 17. Vapour from said separator 17 is fed to the third stage of compression and separated liquid is added to the discharge of said third stage cooled in a water cooler 20 and passed to the exchanger 4 at 35 atmospheres pressure. The so-liquefied natural gas is sub-cooled in an exchanger 5 in countercurrent to a second evaporating mixture of fluids e.g., ethane and methane after expansion at a valve 24 of pressurized liquid mixture supplied by a compresser 23 and having traversed both heat exchangers 4 and 5, and the sub-cooled natural gas is expanded at a valve 26 into a storage tank at atmospheric pressure. Cold vapour is withdrawn through a line 29 and serves to assist cooling of the exchangers 4, 5.
