Abstract
1,141,224. Cold separation of gas mixtures; refrigerating. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP. 4 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 611/67. Headings F4H and F4P. In a process for separating a readily condensible component from admixture with a relatively low boiling component e.g., hydrogen by partial condensation of the feed gas mixture in a heat exchanger 23 cooled by a sub-cooled pressurized refrigerant e.g., ammonia, propane or butane and subsequent separation of liquid carbon dioxide and gaseous hydrogen at 25, the so-warmed liquid ammonia is further warmed without re-vaporization in a heat exchanger 15 traversed by incoming feed gas mixture, is then re-cooled at 28, 30 in heat exchange with separated liquid carbon dioxide and gaseous hydrogen respectively, expanded within partial liquefaction at a valve 56 with a separator 58 from which liquid ammonia is withdrawn by a pump 60 and fed to the heat exchanger 23 and from which separator ammonia gas is withdrawan by a compressor 62 liquefied at 70, expanded with partial liquefaction at a valve 74 into a separator 76 from which ammonia gas is withdrawn by the compressor 62 and is subsequently condensed at 70. Condensed ammonia is sequentially expanded into separators 82, 86, 58 having their gas spaces connected to the compressor 62. Liquid carbon dioxide leaving heat exchanger 30 by a line 31 is alternately warmed and cooled in exchangers 5, 6, 7 traversed by incoming feed gas mixture and turbines 33, 39, 43 having power take-off shafts.
