Abstract
1472080 Cooling gases J S SWEARINGEN 9 Dec 1974 [10 Dec 1973] 53152/74 Headings F4P and F4H Liquefaction of a gas or supercooling of a liquefied gas, e.g. LNG, in a line 31 is effected by a refrigerant which is compressed at 19, 20, cooled in heat exchanger line 18c, expanded isentropically in expansion turbine 23, and separated at 25, the thus formed vapour fraction 16 being returned via shell 18b to cool refrigerant in line 18c and the condensed fraction 7 being evaporated at 2, 1 in heat exchange with the gas to be cooled, the evaporated refrigerant passing to a separator 13 from which a gaseous fraction is returned through tube 18a to assist in cooling compressed refrigerant in tube 18c, the two gaseous fractions from tube 18a and shell 18b being combined at 17 to form the refrigerant to be recompressed. The refrigerant can be augmented at 17 by vapour 11 from the liquefied gas vessel 4. In a slightly modified embodiment of the apparatus (Fig. 3, not shown), it is boil-off gas from vessel 4 which is liquefied and then returned to the vessel..
