Abstract
1,030,600. Gas liquefaction process; refrigerating. SULZER BROS. Ltd. April 23, 1965 [April 29, 1964], No. 17294/65. Headings F4H and F4P. Liquefaction of an overperfect gas, e.g. helium, is effected by cooling compressed feed gas at about 18 atmospheres pressure in heat exchangers 4 to 7, 10 (Fig. 1, not shown), to below the inversion temperature, throttling at a valve 11 to an intermediate pressure of about 3 atmospheres without condensation, dividing the flow into a first portion which is warmed in exchanger 10 and is subsequently warmed to ambient temperature in exchangers 4 to 7 and fed to the inlet of a compressor 12; the second portion of throttled feed gas being further cooled in an exchanger 16 and throttled at a valve 17 into a liquid helium receiver 18 from which product liquid helium is withdrawn and vapour is returned through the exchangers to the compressor 12. Gas leaving the compressor 12 is cooled in exchanger 4, expanded in a turbine 14 and after being cooled in exchanger 6 is joined by said first portion of throttled feed gas and expanded in a turbine 15 and added to vapour from receiver 18 and warmed in exchangers 4 to 7 before being returned to the compressor 12. Make-up helium is introduced through a duct 3 and condensable impurities are absorbed at 8, 9. In a modification the turbines are dispensed with and cold requirements are met by cooling the feed gas using an external source of liquid nitrogen. In a further modification, a portion of feed gas is expanded in turbines 48, 49, (Fig. 5, not shown), and added to said first portion of throttled feed gas.
