Abstract

1,131,418. Refrigerating. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. 16 Dec., 1965 [19 Dec., 1964], No. 53418/65. Heading F4H. A refrigeration and/or gas liquefaction system includes an ejector which is supplied with high-pressure gas, the gas having been cooled to below its inversion temperature, and has a suction inlet communicating with a container, the container being supplied with fluid at a lower pressure than that of the fluid discharged from the ejector. As shown, helium from a compressor 1 is cooled at 3 and supplied to the inlet of an ejector 21 which discharges to a container 23, the vapour space of the latter communicating with the inlet of the compressor. Liquid from container 23 passes via a throttle 25 to a further container 26 where it cools a load 29, the vapour from container 26 being withdrawn through line 27 which is connected to the suction inlet 28 of the ejector. In the modification of Fig. 3 (not shown), three series connected ejectors (31, 32 and 33) and four series connected containers (40, 41, 42, 43) are provided, the vapour space of container (40) communicating with the compressor inlet and the vapour spaces of containers (41, 42, 43) communicating with the suction inlets of ejectors (33, 32, 31) respectively. Alternatively containers (42, 43) may be omitted (Fig. 3a, not shown), the vapour space of container (41) communicating with the suction inlets of all three ejectors. In Fig. 4 (not shown) three ejectors (121, 122, 123) are connected in parallel and discharge into respective containers (128, 130, 132) the liquid spaces of which are in communication via throttles (133, 134). A further throttle (135) communicates container (132) with a further container (136), the vapour space of container (128) communicates with the compressor inlet and the vapour spaces of containers (130, 132, 136) communicate with the suction inlets of ejectors (121, 122, 123) respectively. In Fig 5 (not shown) part of the cooled, compressed helium bypasses the single ejector (60) and is supplied to either the high or low pressure container (62 or 64) via a throttle (61). Only one container (70) is provided in Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), part of the cooled compressed helium being supplied to said container via a throttle (71) and part to the inlet of the single ejector (72), the suction inlet of which communicates with the container and the outlet with the inlet of the compressor. The compressed helium may be cooled by a two-stage Stirling cycle refrigerator (Fig. 8, not shown) or may be derived from the cold space of such a refrigerator (Fig. 9, not shown).
