1,073,928. Refrigerating; defrosting. L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC. ANON. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE. Oct. 14, 1964 [Oct. 14, 1963], No. 42017/64. Heading F4H. [Also in Division F1] A process for maintaining under vacuum a chamber (not shown) connected to a source of gas, comprises causing the gas introduced into the chamber to solidify on refrigerated plates 3, 5 or 4, 6 associated with cryopumps, 1, 2 connected to the chamber, liquefying the solidified gas by warming up the refrigerated plates, discharging the liquefied gas through conduits 17 or 18 for subsequent utilization as a refrigerant for cooling directly or indirectly the chamber. The chamber to be evacuated is alternately connected to cryopumps 1, 2 and, as shown, the cryopump 1 is connected to the chamber and is arranged to solidify the gas introduced thereto while the other cryopump 2 is discharging liquefied gas to a storage vessel 20. Nitrogen refrigerant is supplied to the plates 5 and passes therefrom through lines 65, 69, 71-74 and through heat exchangers 28, 23 to a compressor 21 having a branched outlet, whereby part of the nitrogen is cooled in a heat exchanger 24 and part is cooled in the heat exchanger 23 to pass thereafter to the heat exchanger 28 and an expansion machine 26 from which it joins nitrogen vapour given off from the nitrogen in the vessel 20 and recycled refrigerant from the conduit 69. The cooled pressurized nitrogen leaving the heat exchanges 24, 28 is expanded in a valve 30 and passes to the vessel 20 from which it passes via a conduit 60 back to the plates 5. The refrigerant circuit for the hydrogen which cools the plates 3, 4 comprises a line 97 connected to the plates 4 of the cryopump 2 undergoing defrosting, a heat exchanger 42, a line 98, a compressor 40, exchangers 42, 44, 46, 51, 56, 58, expansion turbines 48, 53 and a return line 59. In the cryopump 2 defrosting is achieved by supplying a defrosting coil 8A with low pressure hydrogen warmed in the exchanger 44 and re-cycled through the plates 4 to the line 97 and the compressor 40.
