831,613. Refrigerating. SULZER FRERES S.A. Aug. 16, 1957 [Aug. 17, 1956], No. 25980/57. Class 29 [Also in Group XXVIII] Gaseous refrigerant, e.g. hydrogen compressed by compressor 1 and cooled by heat exchangers 2, 4 is expanded in turbines 5, 8, 11 between which are heat exchangers 7, 10. As shown in Fig. 1, refrigerant from turbine 11 flows in part through pipe 12 and exchangers 10, 7, 4 to cool the refrigerant flowing to the turbines, and in part through passage 16 in heat exchanger 17 to cool or liquefy medium flowing through passage 19. Both parts of the refrigerant return to the compressor intake. In a modification, exchanger 17 is dispensed with and the medium to be cooled or liquefied flows through third passages 38, 39, 40 in exchangers 4, 7, 10. In a further modification, there is an additional heat exchanger downstream of turbine 11 and this heat exchanger and exchangers 7, 10 cool a medium to be cooled or liquefied. The cold gas returning to the compressor passes only through exchanger 4. In the system of Fig. 3, in which the refrigerant itself is to be liquefied, the cold gas from exchanger 10 divides at point 26<SP>1</SP>, part passing through exchangers 46, 49, 57 and turbines 44, 47, 50 and the other part passing through the heat exchangers in which it is cooled and throttles 53, 55, 58 to liquid receiver 59. Flash gas from the receiver joins refrigerant from turbine 50 at point 51 and the mixture flows through exchanger 57 to point 66, whence one part flows through exchangers 10, 7, 4 to cool the compressed and partially expanded refrigerant and the other part flows through exchanger 17 to cool make-up gas fed in by pipe 65 and precipitate impurities therefrom. The make-up gas joins the circulating refrigerant at point 64.
