Abstract

1,000,590. Refrigerating; liquefaction of gases. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1963 [Oct. 1, 1962], No. 38115/63. Headings F4H and F4P. A multi-stage refrigeration system comprises a set of expansion turbines connected in parallel between refrigerant supply and return lines to define zones of successively lower temperature, the arrangement being such that the portion of the refrigerant stream passing through any one expansion turbine passes through the higher temperature zones of the system before and after passing through that expansion turbine, the pressure ratio across each turbine being in the range 1À5 to 3À5. As shown, hydrogen is compressed in compressors 77, 75, 79 and 81 and is then passed through a coil 93 in the evaporator 10 of an absorption-type refrigeration system whence it passes to a coil 99. Part of the gas in coil 99 is tapped off at 103, expanded in a turbine 101 and returned via a coil 105 to compressors 75-81 while the remainder of the gas passes to a coil 107. The refrigerant then passes through a first series of coils to a turbine 125 and returns to the compressors through coils 127, 130, 133, 113 and 105, expansion turbines 109, 117, and 122 being connected to withdraw a portion of the gas from each of the first series of coils and supply it to the appropriate one of coils 130, 133 and 113. The multi-stage refrigeration system is used to cool a series of coils 144, 148, 150, 153 and 155 through which hydrogen is passed to a Joule-Thomson valve 160, the hydrogen liquefying at the valve to form a liquid bath 166 in a tank 30. Vapour from above the bath is returned through coils 169-177 to a series of compressors 184, 190, 196 having inter-coolers 188, 193, 199. The above systems are used to liquefy hydrogen which is supplied through a line 202, pre-cooled in a coil 210 in the absorption system evaporator 10, and then passed through a series of coils 221-229 cooled by the multi-stage system. Finally the hydrogen is liquefied in a coil 230 immersed in bath 166 and is passed to a storage tank 239. Activated carbon filters or molecular sieves may be used to remove liquefied nitrogen and methane from the hydrogen stream. The compressors 75-81 are driven by two combustion engines 69, 72, the exhaust gases of which are used to heat the generator 48 of the absorption system.
