Abstract
910,489. Liquefaction and revaporization of gases. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. March 29, 1961 [June 16, 1960], No. 11540/61. Class 8(2). Liquefaction of gaseous nitrogen entering the system at atmospheric pressure, through a line 14, Fig. 1, is effected by cooling in a heat exchanger 7 traversed by pressurized liquid methane issuing from a pump 4 and which is thereby vaporized, compressing the so-cooled nitrogen gas at 15 and condensing it in an exchanger 13 cooled by feed liquid methane at atmospheric pressure; the resulting compressed methane gas leaving exchanger 7 being warmed in an exchanger 9 and expanded in a turbine 10 which provides a source of power to drive the pump 4 and compressor 15. As shown the nitrogen issuing from compressor 15 is further compressed at 18 before passing to the condenser 13, the heat of compression being removed by liquid methane exchangers 5, 6. Also turbine 10 discharges through an exchanger 11 traversed by waste hot water before final expansion in a turbine 12. The nitrogen to be liquefied may be derived from the head of an air rectification column 42, Fig. 2, operating at below atmospheric pressure. Effluent nitrogen in a line 43 is warmed in exchangers 44, 41, compressed at 45, cooled in an exchanger 26 traversed by pressurized liquid methane forced by a pump 22 through a line 24, compressed at 46 and after traversing heat exchanger 26 a second time is liquefied in a condenser 37 traversed by liquid methane at atmospheric pressure entering the system in a line 20. The so-vaporized methane is discharged from the system by a compressor 38, and the high pressure methane gas issuing from exchanger 26 is further warmed in an exchanger 27 traversed by propane in a closed cycle comprising a pump 34, heater 35 and turbine 36 before being further warmed in hot water heaters 29, 31 and expanded in turbines 30, 32. A portion of liquid nitrogen leaving condenser 37 is fed to the column 42 as reflux through a line 47, exchangers 41, 44 and a line 48 whilst the remainder is flashed into a chamber 50. Liquid nitrogen from the base of chamber 50 is flashed into a chamber 53 whilst nitrogen gas passes from chamber 50 through a line 51 and a condenser-reboiler 59 in the column 42 and the so-condensed nitrogen traverses a line 60 leading to the flash chamber 53 from the base of which product liquid nitrogen is discharged through a line 55. Air to be rectified in column 42 is forced by a compressor 40 through an exchanger 25 traversed by counterflowing mixture of liquid and gaseous methane and by product oxygen gas in a line 58 and through exchanger 41 traversed by counterflowing effluent nitrogen and product oxygen and traversed by a co-current flow of reflux liquid nitrogen. Liquid oxygen product is withdrawn from the base of column 42 through a valve 57. In a modification the whole of the oxygen product is withdrawn in the liquid phase.
