Abstract

852,844. Liquefaction of gases. CONSTOCK LIQUID METHANE CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 1542/58. Class 8(2). In a process for liquefying compressed natural hydrocarbon gases comprising mostly methane prior to its storage and transport comprising cooling without expansion from an elevated temperature in stages using refrigerant cycles to effect condensation at the prevailing pressure, the liquid is expanded into a chamber 148 and the resulting vapour is withdrawn from above the remaining liquefied gas and is used as refrigerant in the last cooling stage. In operation natural gas 10 containing mostly methane with small amounts of propane and ethane at 700 p.s.i. and 100‹F. is passed firstly through heat exchangers 24, 36 cooled by liquid propane from a reservoir 16 after expansion in valves 22, 34, secondly through heat exchangers 74, 90 cooled by liquid ethane from a reservoir 64 after expansion in valves 72, 96 thirdly through a heat exchanger 122 cooled by methane from the head of chamber 148 after liquefaction and expansion in a valve 156, fourthly through a condensing coil 126 at the base of a stripping tower 124 and the condensed natural gas withdrawn from the base of tower 124 is further cooled in exchangers 140, 144. traversed by liquid methane after expansion at valves 168, 174 after which the liquefiednatural gas is expanded at a valve 146 into the chamber 148. Each of the three refrigerants used performs a closed cycle. That of the propane includes a heat exchanger 214 for cooling of methane prior to its liquefaction and use as refrigerant and also includes a heat exchanger 44 which condenses ethane vapour from the reservoir 64. The ethane cycle includes a heat exchanger 92 for cooling methane in a line 220 of the methane refrigerant circuit. This circuit also comprises a low stage compressor 182 supplied by the line 180 leading from the chamber 148 and discharging into a line 200 to which is fed methane gas from the exchanger 140 and from a reflux condenser 134 of the tower 132. The combined streams are further compressed in a compressor 194, methane gas in a line 198 leading from exchanger 122 is added thereto and the combined streams are further compressed in a compressor 202, oil is separated at 210 and compressed methane in a line 212 is cooled and liquefied by passage through heat exchangers 214, 188 and 152 prior to expansion at the valve 156 of exchanger 122.
