Abstract

879,809. Refrigerating. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Aug. 3, 1960, No. 26848/60. Class 29 In a compression system liquid refrigerant is cooled by evaporation in part in chambers 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 at progressively lower pressures, the evolved vapours are compressed by a multi-stage compressor array 17, 19, 21, 23, 25 and the high pressure gas flows through coolers 26, 27, condenser 29 and expansion valve 32 to chamber 5, and the cold liquid is withdrawn from chamber 13 by a pump 15 which forwards it through heat exchanger 2 cooling the fluid to be cooled by the system and expansion valve 4 to chamber 5, the refrigerant being maintained in liquid form as it absorbs heat from the load in exchanger 2. Coolers 26, 27 are cooled respectively by water and liquid ammonia, the latter also cooling condenser 29. The refrigerant may be ammonia, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, dichloroethylene, dichlorodifluoro - methane, methane, ethane, ethylene, propane or butane. The fluid being cooled may be natural gas or ethylene. The refrigerant from valve 4 may be fed to one of the chambers other than the first. In a modified form, the fluid cooled by exchanger 2 is further cooled by an evaporator supplied with refrigerant from the last chamber and liquid refrigerant is injected into the suction pipes of the compressor stages.
