1374478 Natural gas liquefaction process CHIYODA CHEMICAL ENG & CONSTRUCTION CO Ltd and AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 25 Nov 1971 [28 Nov 1970] 54881/71 Heading F4P A compressed natural gas feed stream 1 to be liquefied is cooled to about - 30‹ F. by passage through indirect, expanding ammoniacooled heat exchangers 3, 6, 10, heavy hydrocarbons are separated at 8 and the methane-rich feed in a line 12 is liquefied in heat exchangers 16 cooled by a compressed multicomponent refrigerant, e.g. nitrogen and methane, previously cooled in ammonia-cooled exchangers 26, 28 and value-expanded at 32, 35, product liquid methane being pressure-reduced at 17 and passed to a storage container. Expanded multicomponent refrigerant is re-compressed in turbinedriven compressors 19, 23. The vaporized ammonia leaving exchangers 2, 6, 10, 26, 28 is warmed at 47, 54, 59 by incoming liquid ammonia withdrawn at 80 from an accumulator 78 and is absorbed in water at 50, 55, 62. The ammonia solution is heated at 68, 71 by hot turbine exhaust, e.g. steam or hot exhaust gas, whereby the ammonia is boiled off, condensed at 77 and collected at 78.
