Abstract

991,001. Cold separation of air. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. Sept. 8, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 32334/61. Heading F4P. Apparatus for the supply of compressed air and production of liquid oxygen comprises a compressor 1 delivering at about 5 atmospheres pressure through a heat exchanger 20 to a gas refrigerator 4 of the reversed hot gas engine kind where it is liquefied and the liquid air is in part fed to the condenser-evaporator 23 of a rectification column 24 where it is joined by the remainder of the compressor discharge after the latter has been cooled in switchable exchangers 2, 3 traversed by reverse flowing nitrogen effluent of the column 24 to the head of which liquid air from the condenser 23 is supplied through an expansion valve 26 and from the base of which product liquid oxygen is withdrawn through a duct 28; the remainder of the liquid air issuing from the refrigerator 4 being pressurized in a pump 7 and revaporized in an exchanger 22 from which compressed air issues at ambient temperature. In a modification, the whole of the output of the compressor 1 is cooled in exchangers 2, 3 of the regenerator type, after which the stream is divided and vaporization of pressurized liquid air is effected in paths 9, 10, Fig. 3 (not shown), embedded in the regenerators.
