Abstract

1,165,274. Cold separation of air. HYDROCARBON RESEARCH, Inc. 20 July, 1967, No. 33495/67. Heading F4P. In a two-stage binary gas mixture, e.g. air, separation process wherein oxygen-rich liquid is withdrawn at 40, 40b from the base of a high pressure column 30 and expanded in a valve 50 into a low pressure column 54 from which waste nitrogen and product liquid oxygen are withdrawn at 66, 68, crude high pressure gaseous nitrogen is withdrawn from column 30 through a line 32, is expanded at 34 and the so-cooled nitrogen is passed in heat exchange at 36 with a portion of the oxygenrich liquid bottoms from column 30. Exchanger 36 may serve to vaporize said liquid bottoms which pass through open valves 73, 71 back to column 30; valves 72, 74 being closed. Alternatively exchanger 36 may subcool the liquid bottoms which pass through open valves 72, 74 to a line 46a leading to expansion valve 50; valves 71, 73 being closed. The temperature of the nitrogen feed to the expander 34 is adjusted by a flow-dividing valve 75 and by valves 76, 77 which determine the nitrogen flow through an exchanger 42a cooled by waste nitrogen in line 66. In operation feed air from a compressor 14 is cooled in reversible heat exchangers 22, 24 in counterflow with product gaseous nitrogen discharged by expander 34 through lines 38, 38a and in counterflow with product gaseous oxygen withdrawn from column 54 through lines 62, 62a and the so-cooled feed air is delivered through a line 28 to column 30. That portion of oxygen-rich bottoms from column 30 not passed through exchangers 36 is cooled in parallel exchangers 42, 44 and is passed through a line 46, acetylene absorbers 48, expansion valve 50 and a heat exchanger 52 where it sub-cools liquid nitrogen prior to expansion of the latter in a valve 60.
