Abstract
1382727 Tubular heat exchangers MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54345/72 Heading F4S A liquid is cooled to a temperature approaching its freezing or setting point in a heat exchanger by evaporation of a refrigerant liquid, the refrigerant having a boiling point below the freezing or setting point of the liquid being cooled. The cooled liquid may for example be a liquid fuel having a setting point of - 60‹ C., the coolant being liquid nitrogen. An apparatus suitable for such a cooling process comprises a group of concentric-tube elements extending through a shell 1 between inlet and outlet connections 3 for the liquid being cooled which flows through the inner tubes 11 of the elements. The liquid refrigerant entering at 16 flows through the annulus 9a of each element wherein the refrigerant evaporates and is finally discharged from the shell 1 at 18. In the tubular elements, the respective fluids are caused to flow in helical paths by wires 10 and twisted strips 17. A bellows-like portion 2 of the shell 1 permits relative expansion between the tubes and the shell. When the apparatus is shut down, any accumulated liquid refrigerant may be blown out of the shell by compressed air applied at 19. The liquefied gas may be supplied to the heat exchanger from a container (20, Fig. 2) through a throttle valve (21) and means such as an evaporator to generate pressure in the coolant; or (Fig. 3) the heat exchanger may comprise the evaporator of a conventional refrigerating system.
