Abstract
848,099. Tubular heat exchangers. WILLIAMS, W. P. (United Aircraft Products Inc.). May 30, 1957, No. 17244/57. Class 64(3) Apparatus in which a heat transfer surface separates two heat exchanging fluids and which includes means for by-passing around said surface all of one of said fluids in excess of that required for a predetermined rate of heat transfer, includes means responsive to the temperature of said one fluid passed in contact with the heat transfer surface or a mixture of the by-passed fluid and said one fluid passed in contact with said heat transfer surface, for controlling the rate of flow of the other fluid over the heat transfer surface. In the apparatus shown, liquid fuel flows through the tubes 24 and engine oil flows over the tubes in a meandering path defined by baffles 37, 38. A relatively large conduit 27 extends through the tube assembly and is normally closed at its outlet end by a spring-pressure actuated valve 28 which opens when the fluid pressure drop through the tube exceeds a predetermined maximum value. The fuel on leaving the tubes passes into an outlet header 26 and thence to a chamber 52 of valve housing 44 mounted on the, shell 11 which surrounds the tube assembly. In the chamber 52 the fuel passes over a thermally sensitive element 72 which above a predetermined minimum temperature causes movement (to the right as viewed in the drawing) of a plunger 71 which movement, acting upon the valve stem 61, tends to close oil inlet valve 68 and to open a bypass valve 64 thus interconnecting the oil inlet and outlet chambers 48, 49 in the valve housing and preventing flow of oil to the oil inlet port 31 in the shell 11. The by-pass valve 64 is slidable in the valve stem 61 and opens aaginst the action of springs 65, 66, independently of the action of the thermal element should an excessive pressure differential occur between the chambers 48, 49, e.g. when starting the engine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 799,571.
