Abstract
1418345 Refrigeration; defrosting PEUCHEN Inc 1 March 1973 [1 March 1972] 10004/73 Heading F4H A refrigeration unit for continuously cooling and drying a hot pressurized gas, such as air for blow-moulding, comprises heat exchangers 1, 1A containing cooling coils 36, 37 which are selectively connectable to the compressor 4 for defrosting or to the condenser 6 of the refrigeration circuit. During the first stage of operation, solenoid valves 10-13 are operated to supply hot refrigerant from the compressor 4 to the coils 37 and cold refrigerant from the condenser 6 to the coils 36. Pressurized gas to be cooled is then passed through a pre-cooler 2 to the heat exchanger 1, by operation of solenoid valves 8, 9, and then the cooled gas is passed through a line 22, through the cooler 2 to the outlet line 23. In the second stage, the valves 10, 11 are operated to allow cold refrigerant to pass to the coils 37. The valves are then operated to cause the pressurized gas to flow to the heat exchanger 1A and the coils 36 are defrosted by hot refrigerant from the compressor 4. The cooled gas in the outlet line 23 passes through a further heat exchanger 3 to an outlet valve 39. The heat exchanger 3 is provided with cooling coils 38 connected to a second compressor 5 and condenser 7. Expansion valves 16-18 are actuated by sensors measuring the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant gas after absorbing heat from the gas being cooled. The solenoid valves may be actuated manually or in a timed sequence.
