Abstract
842,231. Cooling fish etc.; refrigerating. CUDDON, W. G. G. Aug. 13, 1958 [Nov. 23, 1957], No. 36575/57. Class 29 In a plate-type fish &c. freezer having a plurality of banks of plates each bank being cooled by a set of evaporators G, a selected set of evaporators G can be defrosted to free the frozen fish by the means described below while the rest of the sets are still refrigerating. The evaporators G are connected by suction pipes H to a common header/heat exchanger C heated by liquid refrigerant flowing through pipe B from the condenser/receivers A to the branch pipes D feeding the expansion valves F and evaporators G. Header C is connected to compressors L by pipes K and common pipes M join the compressors to the units A. Each pipe H includes a modulating valve J which is wide open during refrigeration. To defrost one set of evaporators G, valve E in the appropriate branch D is closed and the compressors exhaust residual liquid refrigerant from the evaporators. Then valves P are opened and hot gas flows through pipe N from the compressors into the evaporators to defrost them and, through a pipe Q to a space beneath piston J<SP>1</SP> in valve J to move the valve to constricting position thus raising the evaporator pressure. During defrosting, refrigerant condenses in the evaporators and then passes through valve J into header C where it is evaporated by the hot liquid refrigerant in pipe B flowing to the other sets of evaporators.
