638,947. Refrigerating; heat pumps. WEBBER, R. C. Feb. 18, 1948, No. 4726. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1946. [Class 29] Air heating or cooling apparatus comprises two heat exchange units, one 4, 5 being arranged in an air duct 21 and the other, 10, 11, 12 being buried in and having its walls in intimate contact with the earth, a compressor 1 for circulating a refrigerant through the units, and means for effecting evaporation of the refrigerant in one of the units. For heating the air the unit 4, 5 acts as a condenser being supplied with refrigerant from the compressor through pipes 3, 3a, the condensed refrigerant passing to a reservoir 7, a dehydrator 8, and through thermostatic, expansion valves 16 to the evaporators 10, 11, 12 in parallel, with cross-bars 17 welded to the coils to increase the surface. The coils may be buried at different levels. The heated air may be humidified. For cooling the air, valves 21, 25, 27<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>1</SP> and 34<SP>1</SP> are closed and valves 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 31<SP>1</SP>, 32, 33 and 34 opened so that the discharge from the compressor 1 passes through pipe 27 to the coils 10, 11, 12 which act as condensers, the condensed refrigerant flowing through pipes 29, receiver 7, dehydrator 8, pipe 31 and expansion valve 36 to the evaporator 4, 5. The apparatus may be thermostatically controlled.
