Abstract

821,079. Refrigerating; heat pumps. HEAT PUMP & REFRIGERATION Ltd. Feb. 21, 1958 [March 5 1957], No. 7350/57. Class 29 In a compression heat pump system supplying heat to a water system the condenser comprises an inner tube 3 through which compressed refrigerant flows and an outer tube 5 through which water or other liquid to be heated flows in counter-current direction. The compressor 2 is located in an insulated chamber 1 containing oil or other coolant located preferably beneath a kitchen sink. On leaving the condenser refrigerant flows through a drier 7 and restriction valve 8 and then either through restriction valve 12 to evaporator 15 and line 10<SP>1</SP> to evaporator 9 or directly to evaporator 9 through solenoid valve 11. Evaporator 15 is located in a domestic refrigerant cabinet and the temperature in the cabinet controls the operation of solenoid valve 11. A fan 19 induces a flow of air over evaporator 9 and is controlled by a thermostat 22 at the inlet of water heating coil 5, being brought into operation by a low water temperature. A thermostat 23 at the outlet of the water coil controls a solenoid valve 24 through which excessively hot water runs to waste. The lines 10<SP>1</SP> and 20 are preferably flexible or semiflexible tubing and do not exceed the length of the evaporator coil 9. Hot gas defrosting may be provided by connecting a line containing a solenoid valve between the outlet of the compressor and a point on the far side of restrictor 8, operation being controlled by a thermostat at the outlet of evaporator 9. In an alternative construction the chamber 1 containing coolant is formed as a jacket about the compressor and the condenser and water coil soldered to the outside of the jacket. The coil 5 may itself only form a heat transfer system to a water tank and may then be filled with oil.
