Abstract

1,172,206. Refrigerating; heat pumps; cooling I.C. engines. TRANE CO. 29 May, 1968 [31 May, 1967], No. 25815/68. Headings F4H and F4U. A refrigeration system comprises a first circuit having a condenser 4, receiver 8, expansion valve 10 and evaporator 11; and a second circuit having a heat exchanger 17 in thermal contact with receiver 8, a condenser 18, a separator 19, a receiver 20, expansion valve 21 and an evaporator 22, the two circuits having a common compressor 2. Air is passed by a fan 34 successively over evaporator 11 and condenser 18 into a space to be conditioned and the compressor is driven by a continuously running I.C. engine 25. Valves V1 and V2 in the first circuit and valve V3 in the second circuit are controlled by a thermostat 35 in such a manner that: (i) when the space requires to be cooled, valves V1 and V2 are open and valve V3 closed so that only evaporator 11 is operative; (ii) when the space requires to be heated, valves V1 and V2 are closed and valve V3 open, the air is heated by condenser 18 and the heat supplied to receiver 8 by exchanger vaporizes some of the refrigerant therein, the refrigerant vapour returning to the compressor for circulation through the second circuit, and (iii) when the space requires neither heating or cooling, valves V1, V2 and V3 are all open, so that evaporator 11 and condenser 18 are both operative and there is substantially no net heating or cooling effect. During the heating cycle, the evaporator 22 of the second circuit receives heat from a heat exchanger 27 in the coolant circuit for the engine 25; if the coolant temperature is initially too low a valve 24 opens a by-pass line 23 for supplying high pressure vapour from separator 19 to the evaporator 22 until a sufficient high coolant temperature is reached. The coolant circuit further includes an aircooled radiator 28 having a thermostatically controlled by-pass 29.
