764,815. Cold separation of gas mixtures. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. March 17, 1955 [March 19, 1954], No. 7812/55. Class 8(2) [Also in Group XIII] The Specification describes two applications of a reversed hot gas engine to gas condensing or fractionating apparatus. As shown in Fig. 2, a gas, e.g. air, fractionating column 30 has a boiler 37 for the fraction of higher boiling point, heat being supplied to the boiler by a pipe 36 through which flows the incoming gaseous mixture which has been pre-cooled in a heat exchanger 34 by the fraction of lower boiling point. If the heat supplied by pipe 36 is insufficient, part of the liquid oxygen is withdrawn through pipe 42 by a pump 43 and takes up heat in a heat exchanger 27 from part of the reversed hot gas engine 31 (see Group XIII) the freezer of which forms the cold source of the column. The warmed oxygen is then returned to the boiler 37 through pipe 44. As shown in Fig. 3, gas to be condensed on the freezer 70 of a reversed hot gas engine (see Group XIII) is pre-cooled by two heat exchangers 73, 72 arranged in series, the gas flowing upwardly. Liquefied gas is withdrawn through a trap 80.
