Abstract

573,383. Making and pumping oxygen. AIR PRODUCTS, Inc. Sept. 25, 1943, No. 15747. Convention date, May 27. [Classes 8 (ii) and 102 (i)] In the manufacture of liquid oxygen by the fractionation of air, air under pressure enters a pipe 15 and passes through the tube bank 11 of a heat interchanger 10, the boiling coil 14 of a single fractionating column 13, and an expansion valve 18, the air, which is then in a largely liquid form, passing downwardly through the column. Pure liquid oxygen.from a pool 19 is cooled by passing through a heat interchanger 45 and then passes through the inlet valve 34 of a reciprocating pump 36. Gaseous nitrogen from the top of the column passes in the opposite direction through the interchanger 45 to cool the oxygen to a temperature about 6-8‹C. below its boiling point at column pressure, and then passes through a coil 49 around the pump cylinder. This coil removes heat at least equivalent to that produced in the liquid oxygen during action of the pump, to maintain its low temperature and avoid gas locking of the pump. The gaseous nitrogen and liquid oxygen then flow through pipes 21, 23 to the shell and tube bank 12, respectively, of the interchanger 10 in counter flow to the entering air, whereby they are brought substantially to atmospheric temperature and are discharged at any desired pressure through pipes 50, 47. Alternatively, liquid oxygen from the pipe 23 may be directed to a storage vessel in liquid form. Modifications include (i) a double fractionating column including an intermediate condenser; (ii) valved pipes which permit the nitrogen from the top of the column to flow direct to the interchanger 10; (iii) means for condensing gaseous oxygen before it enters the interchanger 45 so as to prevent any oil being carried with the oxygen into any part of the apparatus where detonative combustion might occur; (iv) an external refrigerating system supplying nitrogen, helium, or hydrogen to the interchanger 45 and pump coil 49.
