Abstract
1406631 Multiple effect thin film evaporator AQUA-CHEM INC 6 Sept 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 41388/72 Heading B1B The invention relates to a multiple effect thin film evaporator comprising an upper initial effect 1, and a plurality of successive effects 2, 3,...8, 9...., arranged in at least one vertical column with horizontal heat exchange tubes 31-2, 31-3 etc arranged radially with respect to a common axis, the operational temperature and pressure in each column decreasing downwardly, and perforated trays 104 to feed liquid as a thin film over the tubes 31. Thus liquid to be distilled e.g. sea water, entering from initial heat exchanger 27 is heated as it passes down tubes 84, and the vapour formed passes via demister 100 to tubes 31-2 where it is cooled by the remaining liquid from chamber 90a together with a spray of fresh feed from pipe 106 which has been heated by the condensate from tubes 31-2. The vapour from stage 2 passes through tubes 31-3 where it is cooled by liquid from stage 2 and fresh liquid feed from pipe 106 which has been heated 'by condensate from tubes 31-3. The fresh feed makes up the volume of the liquid lost by evaporation to maintain a constant volume flow through the different stages.
