Abstract
1290050 Evaporators, film type; desalination of water AEROJET-GENERAL CORP 9 Oct 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 48119/70 Heading B1B [Also in Division F4] In order to increase the rate of vaporization in a distillation apparatus comprising a bundle of parallel metal tubes wherein a downflowing film of distilland is heated by heat exchange with a hot condensible vapour, the heat exchange wall 30 (Figs. 2 and 3) is provided with a plurality of dimples 31, and the wall thickness t d of the dimpled portions of the wall is less than the wall thickness t u of the undimpled portions. The dimples, which may protrude from either surface, or from both surfaces, of the wall are so disposed that the liquid flowpaths of distilland and/or heating- vapour condensate down the surface(s) are tortuous in a vertical direction. The dimples may be arranged in square-, triangular-, or diamond-shaped pattern. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 is suitable for the production of fresh water from saline water, supplied through conduit 16. The saline water flows down the inner surfaces of tubes 19, 19a which are externally heated by steam supplied, e.g. from a turbine, through conduit 17. Dimples are provided on both surfaces of the tubes. The steam evolved from the saline water passes through conduit 21 to a condenser to give the required fresh water. Concentrated brine is discharged through conduit 20. The condensate of the heating-steam, which has flowed down the outer surface of the tubes and drips off a baffle (not shown), is discharged through conduit 18. The heat transfer material may be copper, copper-nickel alloy, copper-iron alloy, or aluminium-brass alloy.
