Abstract

1311232 Heat exchange apparatus ENERGIAGAZDALKODASI INTEZET 21 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 44054/71 Headings F4S and F4U Heat exchange between a hot gas stream flowing through a plurality of lower passages 2 and a cold gas stream flowing through a plural: ty of upper passages 1 is effected by means of heat transfer devices each comprising a vertical enclosure 3 containing a vaporizable liquid 4 and extending perpendicularly to the passages 1 and 2. The passages, which are of flattened cross-section, very narrow (<0À7 mm.) and formed in a body of high conductivity material, are disposed one above the other to form vertical columns with series of side by side enclosures 3 between adjacent columns. Different fluids may be disposed in different vertical enclosures 3 depending on their location within the heat exchanger. For example in the region where the hot gas enters the heat exchanger the fluid may be mercury, while at the location where the hot gas leaves the heat exchanger the fluid may be water. The hot gas flow is countercurrent to the cold gas flow. In use the liquid in the bottom portion of each enclosure is vaporized by the hot gas flow, is then condensed in the upper portion by the cold gas flow, and thereafter returns by gravity to the bottom portion to be revaporized.
