Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A heat exchange tube 10 (see Division F4) has in its wall at least one helical corrugation 11 of the asymmetrical cross-section shown in Fig. 2a. Fig. 2 shows the tube in one effect of a multiple-effect, falling-film evaporator for the desalination of sea water. The tube has at its upper end a distribution wier 16 whereby brine from a pool 15 descends as a thin film 17 on the tube wall. The tube is heated externally by steam from the previous effect; and water is thereby evaporated from the brine to mix with water vapour from the previous effect passing downwardly through the centre of the tube (as denoted by the arrows). The corrugations 11 are said to cause increasing turbulence in the downwardly flowing film to enhance heating of the film and the evaporating effect. The currugated tubes can also be used as preheater/condenser tubes for multi-stage flash evaporators.
