Abstract
1,245,808. Evaporators, flash type; concentration of phosphoric acid. DORR-OLIVER Inc. 14 Nov., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 54075/68. Heading B1B. Phosphoric acid, produced by digestion of phosphate rock with sulphuric acid, is concentrated by introducing it through inlet 11 and conduit 12 into heat exchanger 16, where it is heated to 80‹C., and then passing the hot acid up conduit 18 into a vacuum evaporator 24, where water-vapour flashes at the surface 26 of the acid. The concentrated acid flows over weir 28 into vapour-release chamber 30, and some of it is withdrawn through leg 32, while the remainder is recycled to the evaporator through conduit 12. Heat-exchanger 16 is of the tubular type and is disposed horizontally. By adjustment of the temperature and/or pressure in the evaporator, it is possible to control the number and size of the gypsum crystals present in the discharged concentrated acid product.
