Abstract
1295191 Concentration of caustic alkali solutions by evaporation HCH BERTRAMS AG 19 April 1971 [4 Feb 1970] 21015/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] An aqueous solution of caustic alkali (e.g. 50% NaOH), is submitted to preliminary concentration by passing it through pipe 10 and falling-film evaporator 9 which is evacuated through pipe 11; the solution is next evaporated at atmospheric pressure in heat-exchanger 1, the boiling mixture from which enters liquid/ vapour separator 1a whence the solution flows through pipes 5 and 15 into flash chamber 17 at reduced pressure where further evaporation of water occurs and the concentrate is cooled, but not to a temperature below the crystallization point. The dehydrated product, e.g. molten NaOH, flows down barometer tube 16 to tank 13 from which it is withdrawn. Heat-exchanger 1 is heated by circulating fused salt from bath generator 4 through it; but alternatively it may be heated by hot gas. The vapour separated in la is used to heat the evaporator 9.
