Abstract

Process for the manufacture of phosphoric acid and calcium sulfate hemihydrate by wet process, by means of the attack of natural phosphates by a mixture of sulfuric and phosphoric acids, with initial production of a gypsum paste dihydrate which contains, mainly, phosphoric acid and gypsum, characterized in that the gypsum paste provided by said attack is continuously mixed with concentrated sulfuric acid, heating the mixture, if necessary by the contribution of external calories, to create in it conditions in which the hemihydrate is the stable form of crystallization of calcium sulfate, in order to recrystallize the gypsum continuously in hemihydrate which is then separated from the pulp, said conditions comprising: A temperature of 70 to 90º C, preferably 75 to 85º C; a concentration in P2O5 of the liquid of 15 to 35%, preferably 20 to 30%; a concentration in H2SO4 of the liquid of 2 to 25%, preferably 10 to 20%, and a flow rate of treated gypsum slurry per hour of approximately 0.5 to 1.5 times the volume of the recrystallization vessel.
