Abstract
1,209,911. Phosphoric acid; calcium sulphate hemihydrate. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 1 Feb., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 4828/67. Heading C1A. Phosphate rock is treated with sulphuric acid under conditions of temperature and ionic concentration such that gypsum is precipitated (e.g. 60-70‹ C.), the resulting slurry of gypsum in phosphoric acid being transferred to a second vessel where gypsum is recrystallized to calcium sulphate hemihydrate, the requisite rise in temperature for the recrystallization being obtained by addition of at least 93% by weight sulphuric acid. The hemihydrate produced is filtered off and may be used in producing sulphuric acid and Portland cement by the Muller-Kuhne process. Excess sulphuric acid which contaminates the phosphoric acid after removal of the CaSO 4 .¢H 2 O may be removed by addition of phosphate rock. The gypsum thereby precipitated is filtered off and recycled to the initial reaction vessel or to the recrystallization vessel. The CaSO 4 .¢H 2 O may be converted to Portland cement by mixing with coke and shale, and heating to emit SO 2 (beginning at 450‹ C.) and further heating to give cement clinker (to about 1500‹ C.). SO 2 is flushed out by a current of air, and used to make sulphuric acid.
