Abstract

642,500. Distilling aluminium. INTERNATIONAL ALLOYS, Ltd., and SCHEUER, E. Aug. 18, 1948, No. 21810. [Class 82(i)] In a process of distilling aluminium from aluminium-containing material by reaction of a halide vapour with the said material, the halide vapour is recirculated through the system without being condensed and circulation is induced by an injector which may be driven by the halide vapour itself or by an innocuous gas or by a mixture of the two. The drawing shows a reaction chamber 1, halide vapour entering by passage 4 and gaseous reaction products leaving by passage 5, and aluminium-containing material entering at 2 and the waste material leaving at 3. Aluminium is deposited in a condenser 6. A pump 16, protected by condensers 8 and 9 from the hot gases, may provide gas under pressure for operating the injector 19 or the gas may be introduced from a container under pressure. Condensers 8 and 9 are operated alternately as condenser and as generator of halide vapour, being connected to or isolated from other parts of the apparatus as required by valves 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Specification 582,579 is referred to.
