Abstract

<PICT:0691274/III/1> Cyanuric halides are produced by the polymerization of cyanogen halides in the gaseous phase in the presence of active carbon as catalyst. The cyanogen halides are preferably free from hydrocyanic acid, cyanic acid and water vapour. In an example of continuto produce resinous ous operation pure cyanogen chloride is introduced into an iron contact furnace at 350-400 DEG C, filled with beech wood charcoal which had been activated with steam at 800-1000 DEG C. The vapours are fed to an aluminium condensation chamber from which the solid crystalline product is removed. The catalyst is preferably renewed during the process as shown in the Figure where active carbon from a hopper 1 is periodically or continuously passed through reaction tubes 2 and removed at 4. Cyanogen halide enters at 5 and the cyanuric halide recovered in the condenser 6. Specifications 602,816 and 674,813 are referred to.
