Abstract

Monomeric lactam is removed from the solid polyamides produced by polycondensation of e -aminocaproic acid or caprolactam by heating the polyamide in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere (free from oxygen) to 130-200 DEG C., the monomer being distilled off in pure form. The heating may be effected by high-frequency heating, infra-red radiation or in a rotary drum, conveyer worm or band drier, the heat being supplied by a water-jacket, an internal system of tubes charged with dichlorobenzene vapour, an electrically-heated system of stationary tubes or by a superheated stream of an inert gas such as nitrogen.
