Abstract

The alcanolactams whose hydrocarbon chain comprises from 9 to 14 carbon atoms are prepared by heating the corresponding alicyclic oximes between 60 and 140 DEG C for less than 20 min in solution in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst chosen from the group of chlorides or oxychlorides of acids derived from phosphorus or sulphur. The lactams are thus obtained economically, with a high degree of purity without expensive purification operations.
