Abstract

CaHPO4 and H3PO4 are prepared by heating a material containing Ca(H2PO4)2 and 2-60% H2O based on the weight of Ca(H2PO4)2, wit one or more organic solvents having a b.p. of 55-200 DEG C. and at least sufficient to suspend the Ca(H2PO4)2, the mixture being heated at or within 10 DEG C. of its b.p., and separating the precipitated CaHPO4. The Ca(H2PO4)2-containing material may be single or triple superphosphate. The solvent may be an aliphatic alcohol containing 3-6 C atoms, a ketone containing 3-6 C atoms, a carboxylic acid containing 2-4 C atoms, dioxan, N,N - dibutylacetamide, tetrahydrofuran, mixtures thereof, N - N - dibutylacetamide in petroleum ether, tributyl phosphate in toluene, or a long chain amine in toluene. The Ca(H2PO4)2 and solvent may be boiled together and the solvent/H2O azeotrope distilled off. The H3PO4 dissolved in the solvent may be treated with alkali or other precipitant to ppt. a phosphate salt, e.g. as described in Specification 1,089,681.
