Abstract

Lactams are polymerized by heating a mixture of lactam and water at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 130-200 DEG C. for at least an hour to obtain a product melting above 100 DEG C. and then heating this product without the addition of a catalyst and with or without the addition of monomer lactam at 210-270 DEG C., while allowing water to escape, to form a high polymer. The molten polymer may be aged by standing for half an hour or more in an inert atmosphere. Apparatus is described for carrying out the process continuously or with an intermediate solidification of the initial product, with circulation of the water in the first stage (see Group III). The polymerization of caprolactam using up to 5 per cent water in the first stage is described.ALSO:Lactams are polymerized by feeding a mixture of lactam and water from a mixing <PICT:0746374/III/1> <PICT:0746374/III/2> vessel 1 to a vessel 11 where it is heated at atmospheric pressure for at least one hour at 130-200 DEG C., steam being partly vented at 6 and partly condensed at 15 and returned to the vessel 13. The resulting intermediate product, which preferably has a melting point of above 100 DEG C. is then fed to a polymerization tube 17 where it is maintained at 210-270 DEG C. for 8-20 hours to form a high polymer. The molten polymer is finally aged in a vessel 20 out of contact with oxygen for half an hour or more. The apparatus may be operated continuously. In a second apparatus, (Fig. 2, not shown), part only of the lactam is heated with water, the product being mixed with the remainder of the lactam and passed to the polymerisation tube. In a third apparatus, Fig. 3, molten lactam and water are fed by screw conveyer 32 and pipe 28 respectively to the heating vessel 25 the intermediate product being discharged through a perforated plate 48 into a vessel 29 where it solidifies. The intermediate product is later taken in a molten or broken-up state to the polymerization tube 30.
